In mattress and bedding stores, the term pillowtop refers to a general style of bed, made with some additional padding on the surface, to increase softness or increase the perception of luxury. Every mattress factory has their own idea of what will be a popular seller in a mattress store, so each bed is different. The extra padding you see on the surface of a pillow top mattress can be filled with fibre, other upholstery or memory foam. This additional padded surface is built into the mattress, and cannot be removed. The components used to build the pillow top bed surface can be just as important as the rest of the mattress. Some beds have low-cost padding will "matt-down", causing a "body-impression" in the spot where you sleep each night. Better quality beds use upholstery foam, memory foam or even latex to prevent this.
